Great news for motorsport fans: The Racing Day in Assen (The Netherlands) is adding a new and unique racing class to its program. The Isle of Man Classic Superbikes will be making the crossing from the legendary Mountain Course to the world-renowned TT Circuit Assen. On August 1st and 2nd, these iconic motorcycles—piloted by high-speed road racers—will compete in two official races during the free to attend event.
The Isle of Man road races have captured the imagination of racing fans for decades. Millions of motorsport enthusiasts are familiar with the spectacular footage of riders like Peter Hickman and Michael Dunlop blasting through villages, clipping curbs, and flying through high-speed forest sections at incredible speeds. In addition to the world-famous Isle of Man TT, the Classic TT is held annually on the Mountain Course, an event where legendary bikes and top riders converge. Inspired by these unique races, The Racing Day is now bringing an extraordinary first to the TT Circuit Assen: the Isle of Man Classic Superbikes.
During the event on August 1st and 2nd, these historic machines will participate in Assen for two official races. Motorcycles that are normally only seen during the Senior TT and Classic TT will now make their appearance at the ‘Cathedral of Speed’. This special milestone has been made possible by a unique collaboration between the KNMV (Dutch Motorcycling Federation), the British ACU, and race organizer LDP. Together, they have ensured that the Isle of Man riders will make the trip to Assen to compete against each other in a full-fledged competition.
Big Names and Unique Machines on the Grid
The class already boasts a well-known entry. Former Grand Prix rider and current road racing specialist Danny Webb will be at the start with a very special machine: a 1989 Suzuki RGV500, once ridden by Kevin Schwantz. More big names are expected to be announced shortly. Many of these road racers have never ridden at the TT Circuit Assen and are primarily accustomed to street circuits, which makes these races particularly interesting.
The motorcycles range from 500cc to 1300cc and date from the late 1970s through the 1990s. Many of these machines have a rich history and together form a unique and spectacular grid. Although registration has only been open for a short time, the initiative already appears to be a great success based on the first entries. To be clear: these are not demonstrations, but real races. Races will take place on both Saturday and Sunday, and a large audience is expected for the 27th edition of The Racing Day.
Motorsport for Everyone: Free Admission and Non-Stop Action
The Racing Day has a rich history and has been organized in Assen since the year 2000. The event's success lies in its unique combination of cars, motorcycles, and karts, combined with free access to the grandstands. This attracts large crowds and creates an unparalleled atmosphere every year. With the addition of the Isle of Man Classic Superbikes, motorcycles are returning as a key part of the racing program.
The organization deliberately looked abroad for a distinctive and high-quality motorcycle racing class and has now found it. During The Racing Day on August 1st and 2nd, visitors can enjoy a full and varied racing program—ranging from spectacular car races to karting competitions, and now this unique international motorcycle competition.
